The impact of information and communication technology on family carers of older people and professionals in Sweden

    Get PDF
Government policy in Sweden, as in other developed countries, pays increasing attention as to how best to support the family carers of older people. New and innovative means of support, such as information and communication technology, are emerging. This paper explores the perceived benefits of, and barriers to, information technology as a means of supporting family carers of older people. Following a brief overview of the care-giving literature, with particular reference to the Swedish context, interview and questionnaire data collected from 34 families who took part in the Swedish ACTION project are used to explore the role of user-friendly information and communication technology to inform and enable family carers of older people to exercise choice, to care more effectively and to work in partnership with professionals. Interview data from two groups of professionals that utilised ACTION are also examined to throw light on its potential benefits for both carers and professionals. Consideration is given to the barriers to using information technology, and to identifying those carers most likely to benefit. Areas for further development are the need for practitioners' education and a wider range of programmes to address carers' diverse needs. Clearly, lessons learned from the Swedish project have wider relevance, given that new forms of support are being developed in most technically advanced countries

Pathologic manifestations of levamisole-adulterated cocaine exposure.

UnlabelledRheumatic manifestations of cocaine have been well described, but more recently, a dramatic increase in the levamisole-adulterated cocaine supply in the United States has disclosed unique pathologic consequences that are distinct from pure cocaine use. Most notably, patients show skin lesions and renal dysfunction in the setting of extremely high perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (p-ANCA). Unexpectedly, antibodies to myeloperoxidase, the typical target of p-ANCA, are relatively low if at all present. This discrepancy is due to the fact that p-ANCA seen in association with levamisole-adulterated cocaine exposure is often directed against atypical p-ANCA-associated antigens within the neutrophil granules such as human neutrophil elastase, lactoferrin, and cathepsin G. Biopsies of the skin lesions reveal leukocytoclastic vasculitis often involving both superficial and deep dermal vessels. Renal injury most typically manifests as crescentic and necrotizing pauci-immune glomerulonephritis. In this review, the manifestations of levamisole-adulterated cocaine-induced vasculitis are discussed with an emphasis on the typical histomorphologic findings seen on biopsy.Virtual slidesThe virtual slide(s) for this article can be found here: http://www.diagnosticpathology.diagnomx.eu/vs/1764738711370019

Spectral determinations for discrete sources with EGRET

    Get PDF
The ability of the EGRET (Energetic Gamma-Ray Experimental Telescope) to determine the spectral parameters of point sources in 14-day exposures, as planned for the initial survey phase of the GRO (Gamma Ray Observatory) mission, is explored by numerical simulation. Results are given for both galactic and extragalactic objects as a function of source strength and for representative levels of diffuse background emission

    Federal Military Agencies, 1861-1865

The Civil War in the United States was a gigantic moral and physical effort that has elicited the feelings of hundreds of its participants and thousands of its students. Yet, in all of the treatment of the conflict, a dearth of information is available on the informational agencies that contributed to the Union military victory. No historian to date has chosen to publish a definitive study of these agencies and it is the hope here that some light can be shed on four types of organizations that were, for the most part, developed as a result of the war. This paper deals only with the evolution of these units, their organization and personnel, and the ways in which they carried out their duties and the devices used. To get a clearer picture of the major organization, The United States Signal Corps, use has been made via microfilm of the letters sent from the Official of the Signal Officer, 1861 and 1862, and the original manuscript of letters written in the field by Colonel Myer during the Peninsular Campaign. When considering this thesis one definition should be kept in mind. The term Federal military information refers to any information of a military nature, or of significance to the military, both for land army or naval use, for its operations against the Southern Confederacy
